Research is both a historic and essential commitment for Veolia Water.
The company was founded more than 150 years ago under the name "Compagnie Générale des Eaux". In 1889 Veolia Water set up an eminent research centre, based at rue d'Anjou in Paris, the company's historic headquarters.

It was around this time that Louis Pasteur was discovering a vaccine against rabies and new modern health regulations were coming into force thanks to an abundant supply of clean drinking water and the construction of wastewater systems. The water supply companies were answerable to the public authorities, for whom having high quality clean drinking water was now a major concern.
The key research area fall into six spheres of excellence :
Veolia Water's research and development works with that of Veolia Environnement in those areas which also affect the waste (Veolia Environmental Services), and energy (Dalkia) divisions of the Group.
