Brewing

During the final step in the brewing process, "green" beer that consists of suspended solids around 100 PPM is turned into "bright" beer ready for the consumer. The majority of the solids are separated by gravity to the bottom of the tank. However, the finer solids must be removed by filtration. Our filters, Auto-Jet , Filtra-Matic and Verti-Jet are precoated with diatomaceous earth to reduce these fine suspended solids. Whittier Filtration offers brewing companies the capability of reducing fine suspended solids down to less than one PPM with particle sizes to 0.5 micron all in a one-step process.

Gelatin

Collagen is found in the byproducts of animals, especially pig hides and cowhides. These hides are cleaned by hot water extractors to remove fat and grease. Each is treated in a base process of either an Alkali Process or Acid Process and then cooked at controlled temperatures to extract the gelatin. The extracted gelatin needs to be filtered to remove all impurities. Whittier Filtration's Auto-Jet is precoated with diatomaceous earth to reduce impurities in the gelatin to one PPM with particle sizes to 0.5 micron.

Sugar

After the raw juice is extracted, milk of lime and carbon dioxide bubbles are added in what is called the "Carbonation Step", forming calcium carbonate. After a second Carbonation Step is performed, the resulting supernate must be filtered to remove the fine calcium carbonate particles. Whittier Filtration offers second carbonation filters precoated with calcium carbonate precipitate to remove these particles and circulate to great clarity.
